St Ives School pupil wins top award

St Ives School is celebrating after one of its pupils received special honours at United Learning’s national ‘Best in Everyone’ Primary School Awards.  Sophie Banks won the award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Years 5-6.

Sophie was nominated for this award by her teachers for her strong record of academic excellence.  Her nomination was then considered by a panel of judges who were impressed by how she has excelled across the curriculum and for her positive work ethic.  In winning this award, Sophie saw off strong competition from a field of exceptional candidates from across United Learning’s national group of schools.  Sophie was presented with her award at a special ceremony held at the House of Lords on Friday 15th June by the Chief Executive of United Learning, Jon Coles.

Sophie’s academic achievements span right across the curriculum.  Her recent achievements include gaining two academic and a music scholarship to two senior schools, coming second in a Spelling Bee competition, being awarded ‘Translator of the Week’ during a residential trip to France and coming third in a recent inter-school art competition.

Congratulating Sophie, Kay Goldsworthy, Head Teacher of St Ives School, said:

“Sophie’s enthusiasm for learning is infectious.  Whatever the subject and whatever the task, Sophie gives it her all and always strives to do as well as she possibly can.  She is well-respected and valued by her peers, works well independently and as part of a team and flourishes across the curriculum.  Sophie thoroughly deserves this award and the whole school is thrilled for her.”

Sophie Banks said:

“I would have been happy simply knowing I’d been put forward for this award, but to find out I’d actually won it was a huge surprise!  Knowing that United Learning has lots of schools and pupils to choose from makes me feel very proud.”
