Project Goblin Update

An exciting week for Project Goblin as the seats and roll bars have been put together and seatbelts attached.  Once this was done, we were able to have drivers sitting in the cars!  The final challenges are approaching after the Easter holidays - solving a real axle issue and fitting the motor and batteries.  Very exciting!

UniHoc in PE

Year 2 started playing UniHoc this week. Mrs Woodward demonstrated how to hold the stick for fast running & then changing hand position for dribbling. The children then practised dribbling at speed whilst keeping control & remembering to move their feet around the ball. A brilliant start Year 2!

Fostering Lambs

Yay! Pom Pom and Daisy have arrived!  We have been so excited to meet them!  We can't wait to spend the next 4 weeks looking after them, after their mother was unable to, and seeing the children benefit from caring for them. We'll keep you updated on Pom Pom and Daisy's progress and on the many ways the children will learn by caring for them.  We imagine these little bundles of joy will teach the children responsibility, empathy, respect, appreciation of nature and the life cycle, improve their confidence and communication skills and, most likely, teach them about unconditional love!  Lucky us!

Pottery Club

Great fun in Pottery Club as we learnt the technique of throwing a pot on the wheel. We had to prepare the clay, then attach it to the centre of the wheel by throwing it with force! We then centred the clay by ‘coning up’ and 'coning down’. After this, we opened up the centre with our thumb (not too deep!) and created a donut shape.  Then we widened the centre and pulled up the walls to create height.  Finally we shaped the lower section and tidied it up before carefully removing it from the wheel with the cheese wire.  We loved learning so many new skills!

Sports Afternoon

With matches cancelled because of the rain, Year 4 headed indoors for a skills session.  The children worked on skills old and new as well as improving their fitness. They learnt how to perform a basketball lay-up, stepped through agility ladders, practiced reversing their stick for hockey, controlled football rebounds, strengthened their core with sit ups and improved their ball handling with netball passing and shooting challenges.  Mrs Woodward was so impressed at how the children all shrugged off their disappointment of their match being cancelled and worked so hard all afternoon.  Well done Y4!

Year 6 Trip to Milestones Musem

Year 6 pupils had great fun at Milestones Museum yesterday, stepping back in time to Victorian times. They enjoyed visiting the shops, industries & recreational areas & particularly loved attending a Victorian school & dressing up in period costume!

Children's Mental Health Week

Wow, what a Dress to Express day it has been!  It's wonderful to see the children so confident in expressing themselves and enjoying seeing what others are wearing too.  This year's theme is 'my voice', in which we encourage children to speak up and that their voice matters.  At St Ives, we have a school council where the children's ideas and thoughts about how to improve our school are discussed.  We have worry boxes and gratitude boxes, which allow the children to express their gratitude or write about their worries and we are so lucky to have our wonderful Wellbeing Champion, Mrs Cooper, who is always here with a listening ear, running both group and one-to-one sessions for children who need them.  Today was a wonderful way to finish off Children's Mental Health Week and to start half term. Wishing all our pupils and staff a restful week!

Art

A really busy and productive week in the Art department - Year 3 have been taking inspiration from artist Pablo Picasso, creating geometric paintings using warm and cold colours, Year 6 have been working on expressive portraits and Art Club have had fun experimenting with oil pastels. Great work everyone!

Year 4 Science

In Science, Year 4 have been learning all about sounds this half term. They have enjoyed investigating how sounds are made, how sounds travel, how sounds change over distances and, this week, how to change the pitch of sounds.  They explored boom whackers, whirly tubes, glass bottles with varying levels of water in, different sized drums and the glockenspiel.  They made really careful observations and then learnt the science behind how the speeds of the vibration change to make different pitched sounds.  Great investigating Year 4!
