St Ives pupils are going places...

My daughter knows the teachers in the school and they know her, it is friendly, warm and really knows it's stuff when it comes to child development.

Really nice nurturing environment, in lovely setting. Most important is how much my daughter loves it there - so much so she often doesn't want to come home!

My son, like all boys needs to get outside and be physical and the outdoor space at St Ives is an adventure park with lots of space to run and wonderful views, for him to run around in.

United Learning

St Ives School in Haslemere, Surrey is part of United Learning, which is a group of schools operating both in the independent and maintained sectors and which is, itself, a charitable trust dating back to the late 19th Century.

The organisation, which is well-known and growing, summarises its ethos as ‘the best in everyone’. United Learning provides the school with good access to high quality group professional services, such as financial services, HR and IT; sets academic and financial targets; and monitors performance closely.

Being part of United Learning also provides the Head Teacher with a highly developed and trusting collegiate professional network which supports and encourages the sharing of ideas and good practice across the schools in the Group.

United Learning also believes that each school is distinctive and maintains what is called a Local Governing Body which contributes valuable local knowledge and acts as a critical friend for the Head. In short, the school has two levels of governance, designed to incorporate and dovetail local expertise with the strength and resources of a significant group.

About United Learning

United Learning is a group of schools which aims to provide excellent education to children and young people across the country. We seek to improve the life chances of all the children and young people we serve and make it our mission to bring out ‘the best in everyone’ – pupils, staff, parents and the wider community. We uniquely comprise schools in both the state and the independent sectors. As a charity, our sole focus is on running successful schools. We currently educate over 30,000 pupils and employ over 5,500 members of staff including over 2,500 teachers.

We provide a broad education, which prepares young people to progress in learning and to make a success of their lives. We focus sharply on evidence to understand what makes it more likely that young people will progress and succeed, apply that to our practice and continue to learn and develop our schools. We make it a priority to provide teachers with excellent professional support and development, so that every child receives an excellent experience.

Through being a group, we can offer more to both staff and young people than any single school could offer alone. The growing range of outstanding group-wide activities that we can provide will mean that more young people will have truly exceptional and inspiring experiences. Already, we believe that our group contains the most developed relationships and practical interaction between independent and state schools in the country, creating benefits for all the schools involved.

United Learning comprises both United Church Schools Trust, which operates our fee-paying independent schools, and United Learning Trust, which operates our state-funded academies.

United Learning Ethos

Our approach to education is underpinned by a sense of moral purpose and commitment to doing what is right for children and young people. We believe in supporting our colleagues to achieve excellence and in acting with integrity in all our dealings within and beyond the organisation. We summarise this ethos as ‘the best in everyone’.

This ethos underpins our core values:

  • Ambition – to achieve the best for ourselves and others;
  • Confidence – to have the courage of our convictions and to take risks in the right cause;
  • Creativity – to imagine possibilities and make them real;
  • Respect – of ourselves and others in all that we do;
  • Enthusiasm – to seek opportunity, find what is good and pursue talents and interests;
  • Determination – to overcome obstacles and achieve success.

This ethos is our expression of our Christian roots, in schools which are fully inclusive and both welcome and respect pupils and staff of all faiths and none. As a single organisation, we seek to bring together the best of independent and state sectors, respecting both traditions and learning from each. We believe that each of our schools is and should be distinctive – committed to developing its own strengths and identity while sharing our core values to promote service, compassion and generosity.
