St Ives pupils are going places...

My daughter knows the teachers in the school and they know her, it is friendly, warm and really knows it's stuff when it comes to child development.

Really nice nurturing environment, in lovely setting. Most important is how much my daughter loves it there - so much so she often doesn't want to come home!

My son, like all boys needs to get outside and be physical and the outdoor space at St Ives is an adventure park with lots of space to run and wonderful views, for him to run around in.

Mathematics

Between Years 3 and 6, pupils are taught by a specialist subject teacher for Maths. Our specialist teachers keep up-to-date with the latest developments in their subject area. For example, the Maths Co-ordinator has hosted and attends regular Maths Cluster Meetings with other schools to share best practice. The specialist teachers have a wealth of experience to help each child achieve their potential, give a greater depth of learning and prepare pupils for secondary school.

Maths is taught in one classroom set up with up-to-date resources, including Numicon to aid learning, and a learning environment rich in mathematical vocabulary, models and images. Lessons are practical, creative and often cross-curricular. In addition, all children have access to Abacus, an online resource used for homework.

We teach Maths using a cyclic approach, building on all the core skills, namely number and place value; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; fractions and decimals; ratio and proportion; algebra; measurement; geometry; and statistics. The pupils continuously consolidate their concrete understanding of Maths while developing their conceptual understanding in real life contexts requiring them to apply their skills. Our aim is to deliver a mastery curriculum to all.

With many of the girls in Year 6 sitting exams for their secondary schools, we prepare them fully through Maths drops in workshops, past paper practise and exam technique skill sessions. We aim to equip all pupils with a toolkit of skills to take them through their exams and successfully on to secondary school.

Above all, we pride ourselves on developing a love of Maths and problem solving in every pupil. From Inter-House Maths Competitions to productions from visiting Maths theatre companies, there is something for everyone.
