St Ives pupils are going places...

St Ives has prepared my daughter for reception brilliantly and it was also such a simple and easy move into Reception at St Ives as everything is so familiar. The Ivies and St Ives just creates a magical environment that results in happy and contented children, who just love to learn and want to learn - not sure that you can ask for more than that?!

Reception and Years 1 and 2

We understand that starting school can be a major step in a child’s life and we work hard to make their transition to and through these early years as fun, inspiring and positive as possible.

As an independent school, we have the very great benefit of being able to set our own tailored curriculum (please see our Curriculum guide PDFS below for more detail), which allows us to make sure that we are using the most effective teaching methods for the individual children in our care. Children are specialist taught for languages, PE and Music. In addition, our small class sizes are hugely effective in providing a high level of focused teacher involvement with each child, which is particularly important when establishing key skills such as numeracy and literacy in these critical first years.

St Ives focuses heavily on the pastoral care of our children, particularly in the lower school, and within the Pre-Prep we ensure that each class teacher, ably supported by experienced classroom assistants, balances solid academic continuity with nurturing pastoral care to build confidence and a strong sense of self in each child.

Our pre-prep classrooms are in The Ivies, a purpose-built, modern, building, next to our main school, that offers large, light and spacious classrooms and an extensive, secure outdoor play area that is ideal for children to explore, learn and have fun.

We like to balance time in the classroom with hands on learning and so take the children on regular trips. We find that this hands-on learning adds depth and brings each key topic to life for the children. Typical events and outings include:

  • Arundel Castle
  • Animal sanctuaries
  • Knole House
  • Queen Elizabeth Country Park
  • Haslemere Museum

In addition to our main curriculum our pupils can also enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities such as a variety of creative clubs, tennis, ballet and speech and drama.

At the end of year 2 our boys leave us for pastures new and, as with our year 5 and 6 girls, we spend significant time in preparing them for the entrance exams for their chosen prep-schools. We are fortunate enough to feed a wide range of quality prep schools within the local area, enabling future school choices to be tailored to the individual. Throughout the selection process we work closely with parents to support and advise.
