We feel it is vital for children to develop a positive attitude towards physical education. Exercise not only makes an important contribution towards good health but can promote many essential life skills. It gives children challenges that test both their mental and physical abilities, helps develop an appreciation of the importance of team work and fair play and contributes to their self-confidence. Games at St Ives are played in good spirit and with an emphasis on enjoyment and opportunity. A wide range of activities is on offer including netball, hockey, rounders, pop-lacrosse, basketball, swimming, tennis, athletics, volleyball, gymnastics and dance.

Netball
Netball is the main focus during the winter and spring terms and while there is opportunity in the curriculum time, lunchtime practices are also offered for each year group from Years 3 to 6. Two new netball courts have enabled us to enhance specialist coaching. St Ives endeavours to offer opportunities to represent the school in inter-school matches with range of fixtures from Year 3.

Attendance to lunchtime training sessions shows us the girls' commitment to training and consideration for team selection. St Ives regularly competes at IAPS regional and national level with great success. Parents are very much encouraged to support inter school matches and events.

Swimming
St Ives has a strong tradition and reputation for swimming. Despite not having a pool on site, the school makes extensive use of St Edmunds (for R - Yr2) and King Edwards Witley (Yr3 - Yr6). Years 1 and 2 swim every week all year round, Reception every week in the Summer Term and Years 3 to 6 on a half termly rotation. Transport is arranged by school to these venues.

Girls who show particular promise will be invited to an early morning swim club which looks to train girls to take part in inter school galas. St Ives prides itself on competing well against - and even sometimes beating - schools with their own pools! Many girls are also involved in local club swimming. St Ives regularly competes at regional and national events but also regards swimming as an important life skill and enjoyment.

Gym and Dance
In our efforts to provide a whole PE experience, Gym and Dance offer opportunities beyond team games. Lessons are taught by PE specialists and the emphasis is very much about participation.

The school has a range of gym equipment which is used to introduce basic techniques that may then be developed further at senior level.

Dance is very popular amongst the girls and themed units of work such as "Life at the Circus" and "The Seaside" provide opportunities for imagination and creative interpretation of music. In addition the school frequently holds dance workshops with local teachers offering experience of latin, ballroom and street dancing.

Hockey
Hockey is largely played in the spring term alongside netball. The new grassed areas have given us a new mini hockey pitch and more opportunities for home matches. We also give the girls experience of playing on astroturf by using local facilities and encourage girls to develop their skills at Haslemere Hockey club. A number of fixtures against local schools are available.

Rounders
Rounders is primarily played in the summer term on the newly enlarged grassed pitches. It is a fun summer game and there are also lunchtime training sessions and opportunities for inter school matches.

St Ives enjoys a good local reputation taking part in regional and national competitions and were the National IAPS Rounders champions in 2005.

Other Sports
In trying to offer girls a wide sporting experience the PE curriculum incorporates a range of taster sports. These include half term taster sessions of pop lacrosse (a simplified version for younger players), short tennis, badminton, orienteering, volleyball and basketball. This gives the girls an opportunity to learn the basic techniques and rules and helps to give them confidence when they are involved at senior level. Cross country has also been introduced, partly as a club and has proved so popular that some inter-school fixtures have now joined the calendar.
