Music has a very high profile at St Ives. Not only is it specialist taught from Nursery, but it provides a very wide range of opportunities for all children. The curriculum is designed to give children an opportunity to develop skills and experience of musical traditions and cultures. St Ives prides itself on the opportunities for performance such as Harvest Festivals, Christmas Concerts, competitions, informal concerts and a major music and drama production in the summer term.
There is a specialist music teacher teaching throughout the school and they also manage the range of ten peripatetic staff. A large number of girls take instrumental lessons in piano, violin, brass, cello, clarinet and flute and exams through the Associated Board are taking annually with great success.
The school runs two choirs, one for Years 2 and 3 and one for girls Years 4 to 6. The Senior Choir were recent runners up in the local Godalming Music Festival.
The orchestra, string and recorder ensembles give a number of girls an opportunity to develop their skills and regularly perform particularly at the Christmas Concert.
At St Ives we feel Music gives us an opportunity to engage with the local community and the choirs regularly perform at local charity groups and residential homes.
Music gives children at all levels an opportunity to get involved and the emphasis is on participation.
